Caritas of Austin was founded in 1964 as a non-sectarian organization. With a first-year budget of just $30,000, Caritas provided a safety net for people who did not qualify for welfare and could not meet their basic needs for food and housing due to a financial emergency. Caritas is now the largest non-governmental basic needs provider in Travis County, Texas providing case management, one-time rent and utility assistance, housing, education, employment and food. Caritas also provides assistance to documented political refugees. With a budget of over $9.8 million and a staff of 60, Caritas now serves over 20,000 clients per year. According to Caritas’ last income tax return, 88% of the agency’s budget directly impacted clients and 12% is utilized for administration/fundraising. Our mission is to provide a service continuum for those experiencing poverty that begins with a safety net and links them to resources to achieve self-sufficiency.
