Texas Book Festival Amount Raised: $27.46

texas-book-festivalIn 1995, Texas First Lady Laura Bush and a group of volunteers sought an opportunity to honor the state’s long-standing literary tradition. Their vision of the Texas Book Festival (TBF) included not only a tribute to authors and writing, but a celebration of the joys of reading which served to benefit the state’s public libraries. The first Festival took place at the Capitol in November 1996. Today, TBF has: · established itself as one of the premier literary events in the country by creatively connecting readers with the nation’s most beloved writers · surpassed $2.5 million in total grant awards to Texas public libraries · reached more than 35,000 children in economically disadvantaged Central and South Texas schools, providing for many the first book they’ve ever owned · engaged over 1,000 dedicated volunteers annually in orchestrating the 2-day Festival and additional year-round programming · partnered with other organizations to foster a culture of literacy in Texas
